Commissioned Research Call - Bamford Implementation (Northern Ireland)
The 2007 Bamford Review of Mental Health and Learning Disabilities (‘Bamford’) identified a considerable number of areas of research need. The Health & Social Care Research and Development Division of the Public Health Agency (HSC R&D Division) worked with users of research (policy-makers, practitioners and commissioners) and with researchers to determine the main priority research areas.
Applications are now invited to address the following research questions within a Northern Ireland context in the fields of intellectual disability and mental health:
- How do Primary Care interventions in post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), using a stepped care approach e.g. cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), delivered by a trauma focused therapist (gold standard), compare to usual care?
- What would be the impact of providing training programmes in CBT for all professionals who work with people with poor mental health?
- What are the best and most cost effective service models for people with intellectual disability focussing on supporting them through life course transitions including old age and dementia?
- What is the best way to organise the interface between services for children and young people and for adults in order to support the transition from childhood to adulthood?
- What are the measures of ‘recovery’ from poor mental health that correlate best with standard international clinical measures?
- What can we learn from research on a natural experiment in the area of mental health or ID that would inform the delivery of relevant services within Northern Ireland?
- How and why is mental health resilience developed?
- What is the impact of home visits and outreach services that aim to provide greater access to therapies for older people with mental health problems?
Applications are invited for research study grants up to a maximum of three years duration. The number of research studies funded under this call will depend on the quality of the proposals received, the cost of these proposals and the availability of funding. Total funding for the initiative as a whole will be in the region of £2m.
