When booking for a college conference please ensure that you allow a minimum of 10 days for your application to be processed by the college. If you have been allocated a place on a conference you will receive a confirmation letter and a receipt of payment. Please note that pre-payment is required, invoices will not be issued.

Return to Practice

Description: This is a one-day event aimed at occupational therapists planning a return to practice after a period of absence and at OTs or employers who offer placements or supervision to returners. Manual Handling for Occupational Therapists: The Balancing Act and Practical Workshop

This two day course is for OTs working in health and social care who may find themselves providing manual handling advice, guidance and support to carers and colleagues.
The first day will provide factual information on the legal framework to manual handling and detail the occupational therapy guidance document produced by the College of Occupational Therapists. The day will provide opportunity, through case scenarios and group discussion, for delegates to discuss the implications of the guidance and how the document may be implemented in practice.
The second day will be a practical workshop which will focus on the practical elements of safer handling.
Delegate numbers are restricted to 25 for the two day course to provide participants with the opportunity for practical work. Additional places are available for FIRST day ONLY.

Vocational rehabilitation is high on the occupational therapy agenda. The ability of occupational therapists to understand the work issues facing their clients relies on them asking pertinent questions about a person's experience of work roles and the work environment. This in turn leads to the negotiation of effective treatment goals and the planning of successful interventions.
The Worker Role Interview (WRI) addresses the specific psychosocial and environmental factors that impact on a person either gaining work or returning to work. It was designed to be used in conjunction with an assessment of the person's functional capacity and comprises recommended questions for workers with recent injuries/disabilities, and people with chronic disabilities who have limited work histories.
The Work Environment Impact Scale (WEIS) is a semi-structured interview and rating scale, designed to assist the therapist in gathering information about how individuals with physical or psychosocial disabilities experience and perceive their work environments. Typical candidates for this assessment are people who are experiencing difficulty in their jobs, or whose work is interrupted by an injury or episode of illness.
This event aims to introduce the WRI and WEIS to occupational therapists, irrespective of their level of knowledge of the Model of Human Occupation. Please note that in order to use the assessments it is necessary to purchase the manuals but attending a workshop is not essential.

The therapeutic process hinges on generating relevant and incisive questions at the assessment stage. Applying a consistent set of theoretical concepts will allow occupational therapists to gather and record information systematically and have greater confidence in articulating their clinical reasoning.
The Occupational Circumstances Assessment Interview and Rating Scale (OCAIRS) provides a structured and theoretically based means of developing interview skills in evaluation and treatment. It supports the gathering, analysing, and reporting of data on the extent and nature of an individual's occupational participation. Interview questions have been designed for use in a wide range of settings, (Mental Health, Forensic Mental Health, and Physical Disabilities), to suit any adolescent or adult client who has the cognitive and emotional ability to participate in an interview.

For OT support staff and Technicians working in vocational rehabilitation including mental health and physical rehabilitation services.
The keynote address by Dr Bob Grove, Sainsbury Centre for Mental health, will summarise the research evidence on employment and look at its practical implications. He will discuss in particular the individual placement and support method and will look at the role Occupational Therapy services can play in its implementation.
Dr Tanya Campbell of Atos Healthcare will provide a brief overview of the role of occupational therapy in private practice. The session primarily aims to provide attendees with insight into the range of standardised and non-standardised assessments used in VR in the corporate sector.
Delegates will also attend two workshops presented by technicians from Wessex Rehabilitation, Salisbury and Wrexham Rehab Centre. This is an excellent CPD and networking opportunity for support staff.
